Valor Mortis Systems
The systems that decide whether a fight goes well and whether a return trip is worth it.
Confirmed facts on this page carry their sources.
Combat is built around parrying rather than rolling. Attacks can be parried unless they flash red, and parries fill a posture bar that turns into a stagger window. The rest of the game — Catalysts, Lanterns, Nephtoglobin and Transmutations — exists to keep that loop running.
Combat
- Parry first. Blocking and parrying both matter, but parries are what break posture and open damage windows.
- Unblockables flash red. Those are dodge-only; mistaking one for a parry is the most common death in the first four chapters.
- Weak spots beat raw damage. Shooting a weak spot with a firearm fills the stagger bar far faster than trading melee hits.
- Weapons are tools, not a ladder. The Pistol and Blunderbuss exist to expose weak spots, the Rapier leeches Nephtoglobin, and the Claymore clears groups.
Progression
| System | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Lanterns | Checkpoint, fast-travel node, level-up station and Amber swap point. Everything else is built on top of it. |
| Catalysts | Enemy drop used for levels and Transmutation upgrades. You lose the carried amount when you die, so spend it. |
| Nephtoglobin | The Transmutation resource. Attacking, parrying and the right Ambers all feed it. |
| Ferrofluid Flask | Healing charges. Power upgrades make each sip worth more; quantity upgrades give you more sips. |
| Ambers | Equipment effects. Swap them at a Lantern to suit a boss or a terrain gate. |
| Transmutations | Fire, Stasis and Shield, unlocked at fixed story points rather than chosen. |
Ability gates and backtracking
The map is designed to be re-crossed. Three gates matter most:
- Grappling (Chapter 3) re-opens grapple points in Valley of Ashes and other early regions, and those routes carry flask upgrades and Ambers.
- Stasis (Chapter 4) covers poison crossings and enemies immune to Fire; several Vale of Wrath routes assume it.
- Shield (Chapter 8) is the last ability, and it is also the ability tied to the only missable trophy.
After the final boss
Beating the Entity returns you near the final Lantern, with every region reachable for clean-up. Entropy itself closes behind you, and there are no manual saves — one slot, saved wherever you are standing when you return to the main menu.
FAQ
Common questions about this topic.
Is parrying really the main mechanic?
Yes. The combat system is built around parry timing and posture breaks rather than dodge rolls, and weak-spot shooting is the main way to accelerate a stagger.
What is Nephtoglobin used for?
It powers Transmutations. Fire is the cheap, always-available option; Stasis is stronger but consumes far more.
Do I have to backtrack?
Not to finish the story, but a lot of collectibles sit behind routes that only open with later abilities, so a short return trip is the efficient way to reach them.
